This website has been created to help keep Don’s memory alive, and to honor those who help keep his memory alive.
The first seven years of the Petty Open, funds generated were used to help Don's widow, Joyce, who was left without insurance. In 2007, a scholarship/campership program and Don Petty Award programs were established. Since the passing of Joyce, funds realized help promote even more football camperships for Section X players or those with special needs.
A big supporter of the Petty Open Memorial is Gouverneur's and Rutger’s Brian Leonard,
now playing in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Last year, 6 Football Scholarships ($250 each) to attend Brian Leonard’s Football Camp were awarded to:
Isiah Dillabaugh - Massena
Oden Robertson - St. Lawrence Central
Nolan Rufa - Ogdensburg
Hunter Yeardon - Canton
John Paul King - Malone
Mark Horne - Gouverneur
Also, $500 to help 15 year old Justin Preve – a young Malone athlete (football is his favorite sport), who successfully battled a very dangerous form of cancer, a huge tumor in his nasal sinus cavity, called nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He was back playing basketball with his doctor’s OK in February of this year!!! Hopefully he and his family will join us for The Petty this year.
